Zero Drop in Barefoot Shoes – What It Is and Why It Matters

If you have been exploring barefoot shoes, you have probably come across the term zero drop. It is one of the key features that sets barefoot footwear apart from conventional shoes.

But what exactly does zero drop mean, and why does it matter?

What does zero drop mean?

The drop of a shoe is the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot.

In many conventional shoes, the heel sits higher than the toes. Depending on the type of footwear, this difference can range from a few millimetres to well over one centimetre.

Barefoot shoes are different. With zero drop, the heel and the forefoot are positioned at the same height. This allows the foot to stay in a more natural position, much like walking barefoot.

Did you know?
Many everyday shoes have a heel-to-toe drop of around 5–12 mm. High heels and some sports shoes may have an even greater difference.

Why is zero drop important?

Zero drop is more than a technical detail. It can influence the way we stand, walk and distribute forces through the body.

A more natural posture

When the heel is elevated, the body shifts slightly forwards. To keep balance, the ankles, knees, hips and spine may gradually adapt to this position.

With zero drop footwear, the foot remains level, helping the body stay in a more natural standing and walking position.

Supporting natural movement

Feet contain many muscles, tendons and ligaments that are designed to work together. Zero drop footwear allows the foot to move more naturally instead of limiting its natural function.

A different walking experience

Without an elevated heel, many people describe walking as feeling more stable, balanced and connected to the ground. As with any change in footwear, however, it can take time to get used to.

Zero drop vs conventional shoes

Conventional shoes Barefoot shoes
Heel raised above the forefoot Heel and forefoot at the same level
Toe box often restricts the toes Natural space for the toes
Stiffer sole Flexible sole
Foot relies more on the shoe Foot works more naturally

Is zero drop suitable for everyone?

Zero drop is one of the core principles of barefoot footwear. If you have spent many years wearing shoes with elevated heels, your body may need time to adapt to a level foot position.

For this reason, we recommend making the transition gradually and listening to your body.
